When we experience trauma (especially childhood trauma) it often leaves us with more than just difficult memories. It can leave us feeling disconnected, fragmented, and as if we don't quite "belong" in our own lives.
Traditional talking therapy is a wonderful starting point, but because trauma is stored in the nervous system and in the body, deep resolution often requires an integrative approach. Here are five of the best therapy options that I've found for processing past trauma and reclaiming your sense of self.

1. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) / Tapping To Process Past Trauma
Often referred to as "acupuncture without needles," EFT is a cornerstone of Energy Psychology.
How it helps: By tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on the traumatic stressor, you send a calming signal to the amygdala (the brain's alarm bell). This seems to tell your nervous system it is safe to release the emotional charge. It can be an incredible tool for nervous system regulation, allowing you to clear childhood wounds and "recurring loops" of distress.
2. IFS (Internal Family Systems) To Discover Traumatised Parts
IFS-inspired work views the mind as a system of different "parts" (like the inner critic or the wounded child) that have taken on extreme roles to protect us from trauma.
How it helps: Instead of trying to "fix" yourself, IFS helps you get to know these parts with profound self-compassion. By accessing your "Self" (your core essence that is calm and curious) you can heal the wounded parts and help them let go of their burdens. It can be a powerful way to foster internal belonging.
3. AIT (Advanced Integrative Therapy) To Release The Charge of Traumatic Wounds
Trauma doesn't just sit in the mind; it impacts the body’s energy centers, or chakras. Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) is a specialised tool that addresses these energetic blockages directly.
How it helps: AIT uses the energy centers to "wash away" the traumatic charge of specific memories or ancestral patterns. This modality can be profound for those who feel "fragmented" or disconnected from their physical selves after trauma.
4. Creative Therapy Modalities to Process Your Traumatic Past
Sometimes, trauma is "pre-verbal"(it happened before we had words to describe it). This is where creative arts, metaphor, and active imagination (such as Jungian work) can become vital.
How it helps: Using imagery, drawing, or metaphorical stories can allow you to express what is unutterable. Creative therapy bypasses the intellectual mind and speaks directly to the subconscious, helping you weave the "broken pieces" of your history into a new, beautiful work of art.
Finding the Right Path for You
Trauma healing is not a "one size fits all" journey. As an Energy Psychotherapist, I believe the most effective path is often an integrative one, combining the solid foundation of psychotherapy with the rapid, deep resolution offered by energy and creative tools.
If you are ready to move beyond the ache of feeling different and find a clear path out of the past, I invite you to explore how these modalities can work together for your unique journey.
