Are you a hummer? Rhythm, regulation, and why EFT tapping works in therapy

Some people hum without even noticing. In the car. In the kitchen. While thinking. While soothing themselves after a long day.

Humming, rhythm and EFT tapping

I’m not talking about humming as a formal therapeutic technique. I’m talking about the usual hum of your favourite song, or a catchy one that you can't get out of your mind. Humming is available to all of us, it is fun, and a way to point to something much deeper and more universal: our innate need for rhythm and regulation.

Long before we had language, insight, or therapy, we had repetition, movement, and sound. Rhythm is one of the earliest ways human beings learn to settle, organise themselves, and return to balance. And this principle helps us understand how the rhythmic movements of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques, also known as tapping) can be so effective in therapy.

Rhythm: how the nervous system finds safety

From the moment we are born, rhythm soothes us. This isn’t accidental:

  • Babies calm when rocked.

  • Children settle with repetitive sounds.

  • Adults sway, tap, pace, or repeat movements when stressed.

Rhythm provides predictability, and predictability creates a sense of safety in the nervous system. When the body experiences gentle, repeated stimulation, it can reduce physiological arousal and support emotional regulation.

In simple terms, rhythm helps the body register: nothing urgent is happening right now.

EFT tapping: rhythm with therapeutic intention

EFT is a structured method within energy psychology that uses rhythmic tapping on specific acupressure points while staying connected to thoughts, emotions, or memories. Unlike unconscious self-soothing habits, tapping is intentional. It allows difficult material to be processed without overwhelming the nervous system. This is why EFT is often described as “gentle but powerful.”

The Brain’s Dilemma

When we tap while focusing on a difficult memory, we create a "mismatch" or a "short-circuit" in the brain. Two conflicting signals are being sent simultaneously:

  1. The Memory: "I am in danger/pain."

  2. The Body: "I am safe, rhythmic, and calm."

Facing this dilemma, the brain chooses the signal of safety. It "re-writes" the memory without the traumatic charge. This method is so effective that many people eventually forget they were ever triggered by that specific memory at all.

Regulation before insight

EFT can, but doesn’t necessarily, bypass talking or meaning-making. It can create the conditions in which they become possible. In many therapeutic approaches, we assume that understanding must come first. But for those living with childhood trauma, anxiety, or chronic stress, the nervous system needs safety above all things. Rhythm helps create that safety. When the body settles, you can:

  • Stay present with your emotions

  • Think more clearly

  • Reflect without shutting down

  • Engage in deeper therapeutic work

EFT creates the conditions where talking actually becomes healing. This is particularly valuable in therapy online, where we focus on building these regulation tools in the comfort of the client's home.

EFT / tapping and therapy online

One of the greatest advantages of online therapy combined with energy psychology is accessibility. You don't need to travel while being upset; instead we work together through a screen to regulate your system exactly where you live.

Working via therapy online allows you to:

  • Develop "in-situ" regulation skills you can use the moment the session ends.

  • Feel a greater sense of control and "internal belonging" in your own space.

  • Access specialised trauma support regardless of your geographical location.

Final thoughts

Humming reminds us that we are rhythmic creatures. EFT tapping takes that same principle and places it within a clear therapeutic framework, allowing emotional processing, nervous system regulation, and psychological insight to happen together.

Sometimes change doesn’t start with a conversation. It starts by helping the body feel safe enough to stay connected.
